William Vernon “Bill” Marks MARION- 8220;William Vernon “Bill” Marks, 81, of Marion passed away at 10:05 AM, Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Fountain Nursing Home in Marion. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Reverend Ron Henwood and Reverend Kenny Blumenstock officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Monday, July 16, 2007 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Military rites will be held at the cemetery by VFW Post 1301, American Legion Post 147 and the National Guard. Memorials may be made to Whiteash Freewill Baptist Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois; envelopes are available at the funeral home or may be sent c/o Blue Funeral Home, PO Box 411, Marion, IL 62959. Mr. Marks was born February 2, 1926 in Spillertown to Oscar and Clara (Reighl) Marks. He married Genevieve June Barnes on July 12, 1947 in Johnston City; they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. Survivors include his wife, June of Marion; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Kathy Marks and Gary and Cindy Marks all of Marion; grandchildren, Megan Dial, Courtney Marks, Mary Beth and Dan Baxter, Jennifer and John Thompson, Jason and Jenny Marks, and Jon and Melissa Marks; eleven great grandchildren; and sister, Lorene Burroughs of St. Ann, Missouri. He was preceded by his parents and brother, Lawrence Marks. Mr. Marks was a member of Whiteash Freewill Baptist Church. He retired from the V. A. Medical Center where he worked as a purchasing agent. He and his wife owned and operated a hardware business in Marion for 30 years. He served his country with the United States Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a lifetime member of the Marion VFW Post 1301. He enjoyed woodworking and was very good at restoring musical instruments, with violins being his specialty.
