William L. Minton, Sr

Marion - William L. "Bill" Minton, Sr., 88, retired electrician and U.S. Air Force veteran passed away July 16, 2023 in Carbondale. Bill was born January 14, 1935 as the seventh of the eight children of Charles B. and H. Gertrude (Lipscomb) Minton. West Frankfort, IL is where he was born, attended school, and met Marcella Hoebbel while in high school. They married in April 1953. Bill joined the Air Force during the Korean War and served as an aircraft electrician while based in Spokane, Washington.
Upon discharge Bill and Marcy moved to Chicago. Later they moved their family to Lombard where they lived until they retired in 1992 to Lake of Egypt. As an electrician, Bill, was active in Local 701 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers volunteering on the executive board, as vice president, as trustee on the Health and Welfare board, and as a business agent. He was a favorite adult Sunday school teacher at Sunny Place Church of God in Addison, IL.
Bill loved golf so much, playing 2-6 times weekly, that he once shocked his family by stating that had he golfed first, he never would have gone fishing. In retirement Bill and Marcy were active at Abundant Life Assembly of God in Marion, where he served as a deacon. During the past 12 years Bill and Marcy have been members at Purpose House church.
From 1996 to 2015 Bill served on the Board of Trustees for Lake Egypt Fire Protection District and supported the firefighters by attending training classes with them. Starting in 2002 he was a volunteer fire fighter. At age 71 he earned his emergency medical technician license. Lake of Egypt Country Club also benefited from his servant -heart, wisdom, and leadership as a volunteer board member from 1998 - 2015.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marcella and their children; Linda (Michael) Boggess of Jacksonville, FL; Diane Sergeant of Marion and William Jr (Ingrid) Minton of Marion. His 7 grandchildren; Daniel (Melissa) Sergeant, David (Lydia) Sergeant, Thomas (Jackie) Sergeant, Jessica MacDonald (Scott), Christopher (Amber) Boggess, Debra Lammers (Peter), and Seth Sergeant-Neace (Aly), and 23 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Eula (James) Summers, brother-in-law Everett Hoebbel and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles B. Minton and H. Gertrude Minton Hemminghaus and his siblings, Nellie (Vernon) Brannan, Ruby (Ed) Logsdon, Charles (Winnifred) Minton, Jr., Virgil (Pauline) Minton, Betty (Wayne) Reed, Nancy (Floyd) Cunningham and Virginia Minton. Also preceding him are his brothers-in-law, Harry (Dorothy) Hoebbel and Kenneth (Janice) Hoebbel, sister-in-law Joan Hoebbel, and son-in-law Howard Sergeant.
Homegoing services will be held at Blue Funeral Home in Marion on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Jason McKinnies and Pastor Michael DuPriest of Purpose House presiding. Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. at Blue Funeral Home prior to the service.
Following the service, military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by members of the Marion VFW Post 1301 Honor Guard and the US Air Force Ritual Team.
