Velma I. Smith

Goreville- Velma I. Smith, 89, of Goreville, passed away at 12:31 AM, Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Trident Medical Center in Charleston, SC. Velma was born on January 4, 1929 in Johnson County to John Ellis and Mildred (Vincent) Penrod. She married Truman Smith on January 10, 1947 in Johnson County. He preceded her in death on January 19, 1983. She was a homemaker and completely dedicated to the health and wellbeing of her family. She loved the Lord and was a longtime member who helped with communion at Goreville United Methodist Church. Velma enjoyed sewing and gardening in her free time and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include- Daughter- Judy Roets-Farr and husband Milford of Summerville, SC Daughter- Paula Briggance and husband Reggie of Marion Four Grandchildren: Christopher Roets of Charleston, SC Carrie Waller and husband Lt. Col Brian Waller of Tokyo, Japan Ryan Patrick and wife Julie of Johnston City Eric Patrick of Springfield, IL Four great grandchildren Brother- Donald Penrod of Springfield, MO Sister- LuDene Welch of Metropolis, IL Sister- Shirley Annable of Goreville She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother- Vern Penrod and infant brother- Ellis Dale Penrod. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 6, 2018 at the Goreville United Methodist Church. Rev. R.G. Null and Rev. Alan Milligan will officiate. Burial will follow at Cana Cemetery in Goreville. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Blue Funeral Home in Goreville.
