Thomas Burt “Kelly” Shelton, 74, of Marion, Illinois, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 22, 2024. Born on August 21, 1950, in Clinton, Iowa he was the beloved son of Burt Shelton and Betty Macullen.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Kelly devoted his life to serving his country with distinction. During his military career, he received numerous commendations, including the Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, six Fleet Letters of Commendation, Battle “E” Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Good Conduct Award, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. His exceptional service as a helicopter technician and his dedication to rescuing children during search and rescue missions will long be remembered. After his honorable service, he found fulfillment as a truck driver for Gilster Mary Lee. Kelly was a man of simple joys, often found watching classic TV shows like MASH*, Gunsmoke, Gilligan’s Island, and John Wayne movies. He especially enjoyed the humor of Bob Hope. A loving and devoted father and grandfather, Kelly’s kindness and generosity were unmatched. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, often giving the shirt off his back to anyone in need.
Kelly leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his children: Shelly (Thomas) Beutow, Sheila (Bruce) McGowan, Matthew Shelton, Leesa Shelton, John Shelton, Amber Dawn and Brandon Copple. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his siblings: Dennis (Cindy) Shelton, Kathy (Ed) Romanczuk, Christine (Bob) Adcock, and Robin (Cheryl) Shelton, Bob Chambers and Betty Ann Toms.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Michael Shelton and Christopher Shelton.
A celebration of Kelly’s life will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Blue Funeral Home located at 1704 North Court Street, Marion, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM, followed by funeral services at 3:00 PM, officiated by Donnie Colson. Full military honors will be rendered in tribute to his exemplary service to our nation.
Kelly will be remembered for his selflessness, his devotion to family, and his unwavering dedication to those he loved. His legacy will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
