Marion-Russell Stapleton, 95, passed away at 12am on Monday, July 21, 2014 at Marion Rehab & Nursing Center.
Russell was born on September 21, 1918 in Pope County to Lewis and Chloe (Lewis) Stapleton. He married Mildred Sanders on July 4, 1941 in Jackson County and they shared 73 years of marriage. She survives of Marion.
Russell honorably served his country in the Army during World War II in the 2nd Armor Division. He served in North Africa, on D Day, in the Battle of the Bulge all the way to Berlin. Russell was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA and a member of the New Hope Church of God. He enjoyed hunting and horseback riding and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; four sisters; sons, Steven Stapleton and Jerry Stapleton.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 10am at Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Ivan Ryan officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery with Military Rites performed by the Carrier Mills VFW and the National Guard. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from 5pm-8pm at the funeral home.
