Phyllis June Finney Houston, 86, of Herrin, Illinois, passed away January 2, 2025, in Herrin Hospital at 4:25 A.M.
Phyllis was born November 27, 1938, in Herrin, Illinois to John Clyde and Violet (Murray) Finney. She grew up in Energy, Illinois, where going to First Baptist Church in Energy was a big part of her life.
Phyllis was proceeded in death by her parents; her son, Barry Bishop, of Cambria, Illinois; her sister, Karen Hester, of Carterville, Illinois; her beloved husband, Samuel Houston, of Marion, Illinois; two stepsons, Phillip Houston and Randy Houston both of Marion, Illinois; a step-granddaughter, Heather Houston, of Marion, Illinois; and a grand- nephew, Dakota Mitchem, of West Frankfort, Illinois.
Phyllis is survived by her sister, Sharon (Mike) Ward, of Mesa, Arizona; her niece, Sarah Mitchem, of West Frankfort, Illinois; her daughter-in-law, Vicky Bishop, of Cambria, Illinois; and step-granddaughters, Candice Wright, Lesley Gould, and Ashley Mize. Phyllis was the type of person that everyone couldn't help but like. She made friends wherever she was. She had a few very close lifelong friends that I am sure will miss her dearly. The last four years of her life, she lived at Shawnee Senior Living in Herrin, Illinois, where I know she will also be missed. She enjoyed living there and was grateful for the people she interacted with every day. Phyllis had a wonderful life with her husband, Sam. Together, they traveled in a big RV, camped with their 3 dogs, and enjoyed each other's company to many wonderful places across the country. She also enjoyed oil painting and created a lot of beautiful masterpieces. Phyllis will be dearly missed by her family and her friends who were lucky enough to know her. But I, Sarah, am the luckiest one of all because I got to call her Auntie.
Phyllis’s wishes were to be cremated with no services. Arrangements are being handled by Blue Funeral Home in Marion, Illinois.
