Norma LaVelle Summers

September 7, 1925 — April 21, 2014

Marion-Norma LaVelle Upshaw Summers, of Troy, formerly of Marion, daughter of Charles and Ruth Upshaw of Marion, IL, passed Monday night with family by her side.  During her very full 88 years, she was a member of 1st Methodist Church of Marion for over 70, serving as circle captain for 6 years, chairman of the membership committee, and member of the missionary and communion committees.  LaVelle was a charter member of the Little Egypt Art Association as well as a member and past president of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She was preceded in death by her husband Laverne and her sons, Kelley and Tommie Summers. LaVelle is survived by a grandson, Lt Col (Ret) Thad Summers (Jen) of Edwardsville and his sons Jacob and Kelton, a granddaughter, Laura Summers McPike (Jack) of Horseheads, NY and her daughters Alexa and Brooke, a sister-in-law Jean Summers of Marion, daughter-in-law Vicki Valley of Edwardsville, loving nieces and nephews, and many friends, including best friend of 80 years Myrla Sanders of Marion.  LaVelle was especially grateful to nieces Diane Barnaby Boles and Sherry Barnaby for their dedication and service.   She will be remembered as loving, generous, artistic, sharp, and never short on kindness.  We love you Del! A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26 at 11:00 am at Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Jeff VanDyke officiating.  Visitation will also be on Saturday from 10:00am until the time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or First Methodist Church of Marion and will be accepted at Blue Funeral Home/ 1704 N. Court St/ Marion, IL  62959.
