Mildred "Millie" Cast

December 24, 1923 — December 13, 2016

Harrisburg-Mildred “Millie” Cast, 92, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, December 13, 2016. Millie was born on December 24, 1923 in Creal Springs to John and Kate (Renschler) Elkins.  She married Eugene (Gene) Cast in October 1942. Millie was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years; her parents; brothers, Edward and Robert; two sisters, Hazel and Louise and special friend Robert Gay.  She is survived by her daughter, Pat and Harley Shasteen; son, Don and Shirley Cast; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Millie loved music and was the lead in her high school opera and has sung in quartets, trios and choirs for most of her life.  She taught Sunday school classes of all ages for more than 70 years.  Millie played organ at her church, led the Women’s Missionary Union and Vacation Bible School.  Her home was always open to family and friends and her extended family which was quite large. Millie worked various jobs, from donut shops to Dietary Supervisor and Elgin State Hospital with Gene for 20 years, to church secretary. Millie’s favorite “job” was wife and mother though she didn’t consider it work.  To her it was a privilege and a joy.  She was extremely good at these.  Her grandchildren adored her and have spent many happy times with their MawMaw.  Her great grandchildren called her MawMaw Millie. Millie lived in Illinois and Cherokee Village, Arkansas.  Wherever she was or whatever she did, she brightened the room just by walking in.  One of her friends at River to River Assisted Living said of her “When you look at Millie, you see Jesus” that sums up her life. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 16, 2016 at 6pm at Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. David Thompson officiating.  Visitation will also be on Friday from 4pm until the time of service at the funeral home.  A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 10am at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Marion.
