Gardner, KS-Michael Joseph Speers, 62, retired Warrant Officer 4, U.S. Army, of Gardner, KS, formerly of Marion, passed away Dec. 2, 2018 at Olathe Medical Center surrounded by family and friends.
Michael was born Aug. 25, 1956 in Marion to Joe and Helen (Keister) Speers. He graduated from Marion High School and attended 2 years at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Michael served in the United States Army, retiring after 20 years in 2001 and began working at the United States Postal Office in Kansas City, KS. He was a member of the Postal Union and enjoyed dancing with the Gardner Docey Dandies. Michael was a big car enthusiast and sports fan, he enjoyed watching the Royals play. He loved camping with his family and spending time with his grandchildren. His favorite band was “Chicago.” He will be missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Michael is survived by his children: Samuel Michael (Jessica) Speers of Spring Hill, KS, Thomas Scott Speers and Eric Joseph Speers ( Alison Marie) all of Overland Park, KS; siblings: Peggy Jo Bailey and Pamela Louise Carter both of Marion, IL, Wade William Speers (Tamorah Lynn) of Bixby, OK; two grandchildren: Tyler and Levi.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at 1:30pm at Coal Banks Springs Cemetery. Military Rites will be performed by the Marion VFW with assistance from the National Guard. Blue Funeral Home in Marion is assisting the family with arrangements.
