Mary “Ruth” Smart Mary “Ruth” Smart, age 84, of Marion, died Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 2:10 a.m. at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Bob Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2008 at Blue Funeral Home in Marion. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home, or can be mailed to Blue Funeral Home, P.O. Box 411, Marion, IL 62959. Ruth was born on October 17, 1923 in Pittsburg, IL to Eric Clifton and Viola (Kelly) Tompkins. She married George Clayburne Smart on April 4, 1942 in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He preceded her in death on January 27, 1997. She is survived by her six sons and daughters-in-law, Danny Smart of Marion, Michael and Marsha Smart of West Frankfort, Richard and Debbie Smart of Pittsburg, IL, Ronald and Marla Smart of Pittsburg, Jeffery Smart of Tunnel Hill, GA, and Phillip Smart of West Frankfort; two daughters and son-in law, Catherine Smart of Carmichael, CA, and Alice and Bob Thompson of Herrin; seventeen grandchildren and their spouses, Andrew Smart of West Frankfort, David Smart of Reidland, KY, Jennifer and Chris Parmentar of Columbus, OH, Stephanie Smart of West Frankfort, Todd and Teresa Smart of Plainfield, IL, Adam and Summer Smart of Pittsburg, IL, Sara Smart of Pittsburg, IL, Eric and Brenda Smart of Goreville, Amber and Bobby Thompson of Marion, Joshua McAnnelley of Springfield, IL, Nicole Smart of FL, Kimberly Smart and Carl Smart, both of TN, Shaina Smart of West Frankfort, IL, Tony Thompson of Herrin, Meredith Smart and Mathew Taylor Smart, both of McKinney, TX; and ten great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Stephen Smart; daughter, Theresa Ann Smart; and brother, Loren Lee Tompkins. She was as a homemaker and a member of the Word of Life Church. She will be missed by all who knew her.
