John Thomas Phelps, Sr., 91, of Marion, passed away from a lingering illness on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Herrin Hospital.
John was born on July 16, 1929 in New Madrid, MO, the son of John William and Nettie Mae (McComas) Phelps. He worked as an auto mechanic and service station owner for many, many years. John enjoyed collecting model cars. He loved spending time with his family and his dog, Cookie and was known to many as “Pops.” John enjoyed Christian Ministry and black and white westerns.
He is survived by three sons, John T. Phelps., Jr. (Cindy), Gary Lynn Phelps (Beth) both of Marion and David Allen Phelps of Carbondale and daughter, Patricia Lowery of Kankakee. He is also survived enmasse by eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren; two step daughters who live in MO and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; Kathleen Ferguson Phelps; Bessie Dudley Phelps; one grandchild and five sisters and one brother.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 11am at Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Bill Rucker officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10am until the time of service at the funeral home.
