Carterville- Joel Edward Overmyer, 68, of Carterville, passed away at 10:12 AM, Monday, January 24, 2011 at Herrin Hospital. Joel was born on January 13, 1943 in Mattoon to James & Jeraldine (Christman) Overmyer. He married Kathryn Lynn Drake on August 14, 1965 in Champaign, IL. She survives in Carterville. He was a Marine Corp Veteran who fought bravely in Vietnam. Once discharged, he returned home and worked in various positions in mine construction and later retired as supervisor at American Magnetics in Carterville. He enjoyed playing golf and watching his grandchildren play sports. Lately he enjoyed watching old cowboy movies. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include- Wife- Kathy Overmyer of Carterville Son- Joel E. Overmyer, Jr and wife Krista of Marion Daughter- Tamra Overmyer of Carterville Son- James Overmyer and wife Crystal of Marion Daughter- Jennifer Green and husband Lavern of Cypress, IL Thirteen Grandchildren Two Great Grandchildren Father- James E. Overmyer and wife Lois of Urbana Several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his daughter- Michelle (Overmyer) Petkas, grandchild- Lacy Marie Petkas and his mother. As per his wishes, his body will be cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Blue Funeral Home in Marion assisted the family with memorial arrangements. Memorial donations are suggested to the family and will be accepted at Blue Funeral Home/ 1704 N. Court/ Marion, IL 629459.
