Goreville-Jay Merchant, 57, passed away at 7:14pm on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Heartland Regional Medical Center. Jay was born on October 17, 1956 in Cape Girardeau, MO to James and Marilyn (Harris) Merchant. He worked for the Illinois Department of Corrections for 30 years. Jay was currently running for Johnson County Sheriff. His hobbies included playing pool, shooting his guns and spending time with his grandchildren. Jay always had a smile and loved to laugh, he will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include: Children: Andrea Merchant of Arizona Lance Merchant and wife Jessica of Simpson Kelsey Merchant of Marion Granddaughters: Brooklyn and Briley Parents: James Merchant and wife Roni of Simpson Marilyn Webb and husband Chuck of Goreville Mother of his children-Toni Merchant of Goreville He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Guy and Edna Harris and Earl and Elva Merchant. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 3pm at Blue Funeral Home in Goreville with Bro. Leroy Waggoner and Dr. Ron Ferguson officiating. Visitation will also be on Saturday from 1pm-3pm at the funeral home.
