MARIONJames L. Jim Askew, 74, of Marion passed away at 4:25 PM on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 15, 2009 at the Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Randy Uselton officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mt Pleasant Shed Cemetery. Military rites will be held at the cemetery by VFW Post 1301, American Legion Post 147 and the National Guard. Jim was born November 18, 1934 in Evanston, Illinois to Beaven and Mildred (Zulager) Askew. He married Violet Mandrell on December 30, 1963 in Marion they shared 45 years of marriage.
Survivors include his wife Violet; sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin L. & Cheryl Askew of Marion and Bobby Joe & Denine Fisher of Effingham; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Ruth & Bob Edmondson of Marion; brother, David & Sharon Askew of Marion; mother-in-law, Opal Atwood; brothers and sisters-in-law Jimmy & Reba Mandrell and Hubert & Doris Mandrell; along with several nieces & nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
Jim served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was of the Baptist Faith. He retired as a Lieutenant from the Vienna Correctional Center after 25 years. Jim worked security for the Illinois Center Mall for 9 years. He volunteered at the V.A. Hospital in Marion. He was a member of the New Columbia Masonic Lodge. Jim enjoyed going to the movies, nature walks, attending his sons drag racing, and his son Kevins band. He will be missed by all who knew him.
