James L. “J.B.” Burks
CARTERVILLE- 8220;James “J.B.” Burks, 80, of Carterville formerly of Marion and Carbondale passed away at 11:16 P.M., Sunday, February 3, 2008 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the Blue Funeral Home in Marion. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Richland Cemetery in Bloomington Indiana. Military rites will be held at the funeral home by VFW Post 1301, American Legion Post 147 and the National Guard. J.B. was born August 13, 1927 in Bloomington, Indiana to James L. Burks Sr. and Frances (Raper) Burks.
Survivors include his daughter Michelle and Drew Stringer of Owensboro, KY.; Sons, Jack Burks of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Gary and Ramona Burks of Redding, Calif., James and Cassy Burks of Carterville, Il., Danny Burks and fiancé Natalie of Altamonte Springs, Fl.; Sisters Virginia Reggs, Jane and Bob Flinn, and, Fredonna Curry; Grandchildren include Courtney Burks, Ryan Burks, Danara Burks, Brennan Burks, James Xavier Burks, Kaiden Burks, Maddox Burks, Miles Burks, Kionna Burks,Indiana, Broch, Kaitlin, and Tabitha Burks.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack Burks; sister, Margarite Delaney; and his son, Billy Burks.; Also 3 brother-in-laws, Harold Reggs, Paul Delaney, and Foster Curry.
J.B. attended Bloomington High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 - 8220; 1949. He then moved from Indiana to Southern Illinois and his family owned and operated LBJ Steakhouse in Carbondale for several years. JB soon moved to Belize in Central America where he lived for 10 years opening a restaurant which became internationally known. After returning to Illinois in 1987 he worked for Hamilton Motor Sales for many years until opening his own auto business (Country Village Auto Sales) which he operated until health failure in 2001. He was a proud member of the Eagles, VFW, American Legion, and the Amvets, all of Marion as well as the Elkâs in Carbondale.
