MARION-Fred L. Powell, 87, of Marion passed away at 5:50 PM, Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the V. A. Medical Center in Marion.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Coal Bank Springs Cemetery east of Marion. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by VFW Post 1301, American Legion Post 147 and the National Guard. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until the time of the service on Tuesday at Blue Funeral Home in Marion. Memorials may be made to the Marion V.F.W. and American Legion Ritual Team; envelopes are available at the funeral home or may be sent c/o Blue Funeral Home, PO Box 411, Marion, IL 62959.
Mr. Powell was born January 14, 1922 in Carrier Mills to Thomas and Goldie (Killman) Powell.
Survivors include his children, Dianna & Danny Travelstead, Greg & Patti Powell, and Randy & Trisha Powell; grandchildren, Stacey & John Pasoni, Nikki & David Gulley, Allison Pape, and Nik Powell; great-grandchildren, Braden, Rylan, Braylan, Hayven, Grace, Joseph, and Olivia; brother Charlie & Dianna Powell; special niece, Patsy Nolen; and special nephew, Freddy Nolen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Lena Nolen, Nell Trover, Annie Parks, Zane Powell, Louise Rush, and Dennis Powell.
Fred served his country during World War II in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Franklin. He was a 60 year member of the American Legion and V.F.W. he also liked to hunt, fish, and dance.
