Donald Hood

Donald E. Hood, 85 of Goreville Illinois, passed away peacefully, Thursday, February 20, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna. He was born July 13, 1928. Don worked for the Illinois Department of Corrections as a sociologist in Joliet Illinois, retiring in 1987 as an Assistant Warden for the Vienna Correctional Center. Don also served the United States Army in WW II and Korea. After retirement, Don did consulting work for the American Correctional Association. Don was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goreville where he sang in the choir and was an active member of the congregation. He had a passion for music being a featured vocal soloist and playing the tenor saxophone and clarinet in the Shawnee Community Band. His greatest joy came from his family. Don was a very quiet, shy, non-assuming man who was always trying to put others needs before his. An example of this is his donation of his brain to Alzheimer’s Research. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mabel Brothers Hood, his brothers Earl Hood, August Leon (Buddy) Hood, his sisters Edith Mosko and Lucille Davis, and a nephew Jerry Hood. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Maxine (Schroedel) Hood whom he married on March 12, 1954, his children Sheri Luecking and her husband Ed of Belleville and Michael Hood and his wife Laura of Goreville, grandchildren Jennifer Albracht (Derek) Jamie Wells, Josh Luecking (Courtney), Amanda Holm (Kyle), Justin Hood, and Brittany Hood. Don has 7 great grandchildren and is also survived by loved nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Goreville United Methodist Church on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 10am. Visitation will be held at the church also on Monday, February 24, 2014 from 8 am to 10 am, Rev. Michael Hood and Rev. Ed Hoke officiating. Burial to follow at Mound City National Cemetery, Mound City, IL. Blue Funeral Home in Goreville in assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna Resident’s Benefit Fund or the Goreville United Methodist Church and will be accepted at Blue Funeral Home/ PO Box 411/ Marion, IL 62959.
