Mt. Vernon-Dakota Lane Mitchem, 16, passed away at 11:02 am on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Dakota was born on April 7, 1998 in Marion to William Mitchem and Sarah (Hester) Mitchem. He was a sophomore at Mt. Vernon Township High School, where he was a straight “A” honor roll student and was on the drum line. Dakota was musically inclined and enjoyed playing the guitar, bass and drums Survivors include: Father-William Mitchem and wife Heather of Mt. Vernon Mother-Sarah Mitchem and fiancé Mark Holland of West Frankfort Brothers: Cody Mitchem and Benjamin Mitchem of Marion Step brother-Ian Miller of Chicago Step sister-Gabrielle Miller of Marion Maternal grandparents: John and Anita Hester of Marion Karen Hester of Carterville Paternal grandparents-William and Nancy Mitchem of Johnston City He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Gerelinda (Linda) Mitchem Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Jerry Schell and Rev. Gilbert Craig officiating. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will also be on Saturday from 12pm until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested to the family and will be accepted at Blue Funeral Home/ 1704 N. Court St/ Marion, IL 62959.
