Marion-Charles Grover Thetford, 79, passed away at 2am on Friday, March 7, 2014 at his home.
Charles was born in Williamson County on May 14, 1934 to Roy and Etha (Nell) Thetford. He was in a family of four other children, Ruth, Carl, Myrl Ann and Retha. Charles married Nancy Patterson in 1974 and was married for 33 years before her passing.
He was a long standing member of local operating engineers for 55 years and worked on most roads in Southern Illinois. Charles was employed by Superior Construction Co. for over 20 years, which was like a family to him. He served two years in Korea from October 1956 to July 1958. Charles had several hobbies but the one he enjoyed the most was chainsaw carving with his brother in law Joe and how they made fun of each other’s work.
Survivors include his four children: Steve (Elizabeth) Thetford, Gary (Susan) James, Glen James and Heather (Gordon) McKnight; six grandchildren: Jonah Thetford, Jessica James, Amanda James, Charlie James, Alicia James and Ashley James; sister Myrl Ann (Joe) Upchurch and brother, Carl “Sonny” Thetford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy; sister, Ruth Hudgens and brother, Retha James.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at noon at Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Carl Eastman officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will also be on Tuesday from 10am-12pm at the funeral home.
