Billy Charles Lingle (Bill) 76, of rural Goreville died Monday morning, January 9, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.
Bill was born June 12, 1935, in Tunnel Hill Township to Chester and Geraldine Lingle in a home delivery, just across the field from where he has resided for the past 54 years.
Bill married Doris Breeden on December 25, 1957, in Glendale Methodist Church. They observed their 54th wedding anniversary this past Christmas. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Charles Lingle (Naomi) of Goreville, Grandchildren Bethany and Jonathan Lingle of Goreville, a great grandson, Braxton Lingle-Hurt, and Nephew Kenny (Kim) Lingle of Herrin.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Geraldine Lingle and his brother, Thornton Lee Lingle.
Bill was a graduate of Goreville High School, class of 1953. He attended Southern Illinois University 3 ½ years. He dropped out of school for 1 semester to work and was drafted into the army for a 2 year tour of duty. He was lucky enough to serve his overseas duty in Hawaii working in the Adjutant Generals office. Bill was there when Hawaii became a state.
Bill was a lifelong farmer. He enjoyed his cattle and watching his crops grow. He also worked out of the Laborers Union Hall on such projects as the building of Interstates 57 and 24, and the Trunk Line Pipe Line that came across Southern Illinois. Bill was also a rural mail carrier for several years.
Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He was diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) in 1996. Until his health failed he enjoyed quail hunting, pheasant hunting at Rend Lake, and coon hunting. He took pride in his gun dogs and tree hounds. Bill also enjoyed fishing.
Services will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at Blue Funeral Home in Goreville. Burial will be in Webb Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Tuesday night at the Funeral Home.
Memorials can be made to the American Lung Association. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
