Adelheid Poland, a remarkable woman of strength, determination, and love, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on June 11, 1928, in Germany to Albert and Gertrude Spohn. Growing up during wartime, Adelheid’s life was a testament to resilience and devotion.
Adelheid made her home in Marion, Illinois, where she built a life filled with hard work and family. She dedicated many years to the dry-cleaning industry, working at Charles Todd Dry Cleaning, which later became Aramark and also working for Foxes Dry Cleaners. She took pride in her work and was known for her unwavering commitment.
Her passions extended beyond her career. Adelheid was an avid reader who loved taking her family to the public library. She especially enjoyed romance novels, cookbooks, and literature about her beloved homeland of Germany. She was a strong advocate for healthy eating and often shared her enthusiasm for the nutritional benefits of blueberries.
Family was the cornerstone of Adelheid’s life. She delighted in being “Nana” to her grandchildren, and her excitement to welcome her another great-great-grandchild was boundless. Adelheid’s legacy lives on through her son John (Angie) Poland and her daughter Linda (Chris) Alltenberger; her grandchildren, Tara Poland, Chris Poland, Jimmy and Natalie Poland, Justin and Destiny Simpson, Brittany and Anthony Jones, Kody and Kory Fann; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Gertrude, and her sons, Jimmy Poland and Michael Poland.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Blue Funeral Home in Marion, Illinois. A service celebrating Adelheid’s life will follow at 12:00 noon, with burial at Maplewood Cemetery in Marion.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to the Marion Carnegie Library, a place that held a special place in Adelheid’s heart. Condolences may be shared with the family online at bluefuneralhome.com.
